Penn Beta's Sesquincentenial Celebration

On September 9, 2005, Pennsylvania Beta celebrated its 150th consecutive year of existence at Allegheny College. Founded in 1855 by Brother Thomas Ruskin Kennedy, Penn Beta enjoys a long and proud tradition of excellence at this celebrated institution. The 150 mark makes Penn Beta the oldest, uninterrupted chapter of any fraternity nationally, a cause for undergrads and alumni to celebrate. The chapter thanks all those alumni who were able to attend and send our best wishes to those Brothers present in spirit only.

Penn Beta undergrads and alumni celebrated the occasion with a weekend of events. The event began with a reception, dinner and several speeches. This portion of the celebration was hosted at the newly renovated Tippie Alumni Center at Cochran Hall. A fine dinner was provided for guests in the Tillotson Dining Room, donated by Brother Bill Tillotson, Penn Beta '52, and his wife Carol Hefren Tillotson '54.

Brother Jose Rodriguez presented the keynote speech, reminding the undergrads of what it means to be a Phi Psi. His words rang true to the alumni memories, and inspired the undergrads to return Penn Beta to its rightful place atop the fraternal system at Allegheny College. Our Academic program, recruitment program and general outlook on the Chapter were profoundly influenced by his words, and the Chapter thanks him for his input.

The weekend concluded with a golf outing, providing a relaxed atmosphere for undergrads and alumni to reminisce in their common experiences and strengthen their fraternal bonds. As Brother Frank Palermo said in his closing speech, "We are Phi Psi eternal. United by friendship, sustained by honor, united by truth: we live and flourish."
